Fire Prevention Week Safety Tips

Date:
10/10/12

October 7-13 is National Fire Prevention Week, so October is a wonderful time to review fire prevention tactics. If you have any questions about fire prevention or would like to review any of these procedure/tips please know that the members of the Minster-Jackson Township Fire Department are at your service.

Fire prevention and safety tips:

  • Install smoke detectors on each floor level. Replace batteries in existing detectors. Check them each month. A working detector can give you a few precious minutes of warning needed to get out of a burning house.
  • Develop an escape plan with your family and practice it. Know two ways out of each room. Practice crawling out under the smoke.
  • Purchase chain ladders to provide an escape route for second floor windows.
  • Have your chimney and heating system inspected. Keep drapes, furniture, bedding and other flammable materials away from heaters.
  • Install and maintain a carbon monoxide detector.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  • Be careful with candles. Never leave candles unattended.
  • Never smoke in bed. Dispose of smoking materials properly.
  • In case of a fire call 911 immediately. Early notification can make all the difference.
