Date:
11/13/12

Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes.

It was recently reported that local community members have noticed that their garbage bags have been tampered with or have gone missing before their scheduled pick up time. It is likely that the persons responsible are going through the trash searching for bills or other documents that contain sensitive information.

How can you protect yourself from identity thieves? The Federal Trade Commission offers some tips and advice on what to do if you think you are a victim of identity theft. You are also asked to report any suspicious activity to the Minster Police Department at 419.628.2378. Please include a description of the persons/vehicles involved (including license plate numbers) if you are safely able to obtain this information.
