Call 811 Before You Dig

Whether you’re planting a tree or shrub, removing tree roots, installing a deck or pool, digging holes for fence posts or mailbox posts, installing a basketball hoop, or adding a retaining wall, every job requires a call.  Don’t gamble with your safety – smart digging always requires a call to 811.  Knowing where underground utility lines are buried before you dig will help protect you front injury and prevent damages to utilities, service disruptions and potential fines and repair costs.  The depth of utility lines varies, and there may be multiple utility lines in one common area.

In Ohio, by law, everyone – including homeowners – MUST contact the Ohio Utilities Protection Service, 1-800-362-2764 or 811, at least 48 hours but no more than 10 working days (excluding weekends and legal holidays) before beginning ANY digging on their property.  You can also enter your request online with e-dig http://www.oups.org/edig the easy online dig request for homeowners.

Remember the marks indicate approximate location of the utility line; within 18 inches on either side of the line.  The Ohio Utilities Protection Service acts as a communication link between utility companies and individuals planning any digging activity.
